In fall 2016, the State Board of Education (SBE) and the California Department of Education (CDE) unveiled the California School Dashboard, a new Web site that provides parents, educators, and the public with important information they can use to review progress in schools and school districts in an easy-to-understand report card format. This dashboard will be updated and released every fall. The 2016 Dashboard is currently available, while the 2017 Dashboard will be available this December. The Dashboard can be found at:

The California School Dashboard is a critical piece of California’s new school accountability and continuous improvement system. The state’s former accountability system—the Academic Performance Index (API)—relied only on standardized tests and gave schools a single score. That system was suspended three years ago. The new Dashboard relies on multiple ways to measure school progress and performance in different areas which are called “State Priorities”. These priorities are divided into two parts: state indicators and local indicators. The state indicators are generated by the state and contain a performance rating in six categories: Standardized Test Scores, Career/College Readiness, English Learner Progress, Graduation Rate, Suspension Rate, and Chronic Absenteeism. Local school districts generate the second part of the Dashboard. These are called local indicators and include four categories: Basic Services and School Conditions, Implementation of State Standards, Parent Engagement, and School Climate. These indicators are required to be shared out during an open session at a local school board meeting.

The information on the CA School Dashboard provides local communities with meaningful and relevant information on how well schools and districts are doing. It will help local district decision-making by highlighting both the progress of schools in general and the progress of specific student groups, shining a light on disparities and helping stakeholders pinpoint where resources should be directed. All parents and the public are encouraged to check out the California School Dashboard every year.
