Learning is delicious: RISE students prepping pizzas
RISE Academy students spent earlier this month dining on Rustic Crumble pizza they handmade themselves.
As part of culinary arts education, RISE tried to get students out to local restaurants to see and learn how their food is made.
RISE teacher Jason Palmer said this month the focus is on pizza. Students attempted to make pizzas with Dutch ovens at a campground to limited success the week before. Now students are getting a small lesson in biology and culinary arts learning to make Rustic Crumble’s sourdough pizza dough.
“They’re learning about live cultures, bacteria and yeast making sourdough,” Palmer said.
“The philosophy behind it is students learn a lot more being outside with multiple responsible adults, making community connections through hands-on learning, than they do from textbooks,” Palmer said.
